Artist, Poet, Journalist ...
A wild-eyed explorer of the urban landscape, as an artist Dan believes in magic and mayhem in equal amounts. He is always willing, and occasionally able, to pull the rabbit out of the hat. Dan’s work, using painting, performance and poetry, explores themes of childhood, memory and nostalgia.

As a freelance journalist, Dan writes about arts and music for magazines and papers across South East England, and as a specialist in writing for websites his words can be read world-wide.

New Thompson Towers for 2007   View Printable Version
Well, we've got a new Thompson Towers this year - we moved last October to Lanfranc Road. The house is a little larger, the street a lot busier, and we're much closer to the town and to other open houses.

After so long at the old house it feels a little odd - we don't quite know where work will go this year, while at the old house we had all the spaces well mapped out.

Where Did Your Blog Go?   View Printable Version
A busy day - hence this being the first blog entry, two hours twenty minutes after we opened. A steady stream of visitors, and lots of them staying a long time, too. And it's strong winds blowing here in West Worthing - so we haven't had the doors opening, meaning the house has felt fuller.
50 People & Some Dogs   View Printable Version
50 people, of every shape and size. And some children. And three dogs, so far. We have a stash of dog treats in the cupboard which have come in very useful.
Badges, Cards & Pots   View Printable Version
The cooler weather has encouraged people out of doors, and it's been really busy for the first hour and a half, followed by a slightly calmer patch - giving me a chance to blog. There have been lots of small sales; cards, badges, jewellery and some pots by Ben Barker have gone.
Open House Has Anti-Neighbours   View Printable Version
And amongst all of this, the neighbours at the end of the garden have been building a ridiculously large roof extension, the full width of the house and as high as the roof line, which gives them a great view of our back garden. It apparently doesn't need planning permission; amazing, that you can add a third storey to an end-of-terrace home and nobody can stop you.

They've always been the anti-neighbours. Their first act on moving into the house (previously occupied by the charming if slightly dotty Gladys) was to put up high fences around the garden, block of the twitten at the side of the house with a locked gate and add a security floodlight to their back garden. It's bright enough to allow you to read a book in our bedroom, and it goes off half a dozen times every night ... triggered by hedgehogs, foxes and mice. Now, surely that's ASBO behaviour?
Week Two   View Printable Version
It's been another busy week. Artists & Makers Festival sponsors Spofforths hold a summer drinks event at Arundel Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust each year, with our work on the walls.

That Busy - Quiet Thing Again   View Printable Version
We started with a rush, and the first hour has been really busy. We've had Jon and Sarah (organisers of the Brighton Art Fair), next door neighbours and a swarm of general public, too.
Day Two, Part One   View Printable Version
After a slow day yesterday (with everyone missing a beautiful day to sit inside and watch England lose a football match) I'm looking forward to a slightly larger crowd today.

Festival Launch   View Printable Version
This year's festival got off to a noisy start this morning, with an event in Worthing town centre. We set up camp outside the Guildbourne Centre, with Rhythm Inc leading a percussion making workshop (on a rug under a tree) while Celebration Samba and The Bamboo Band took turns to make some noise.

Celebration Samba were the best I've heard them - really tight and on the beat. And the effect of their sound bouncing off the shops around South Street Square was magnificent (even if the grumpy owner of Gladstone Bags complained that it was too loud)

Open House - First Sale   View Printable Version
We've had our first sale. A watercolour by Fred Pipes sold within a minute of being hung on the wall.
